  1. About six months ago I bought the FARO G2 ANR active noise-canceling headset to counter, well, just getting old. While I’m not in a position to compare them to the more expensive brands, for my needs, they work great! They offer significant noise reduction and are very comfortable. Because they store the batteries in a separate box, the headset is lightweight. Aside: the (rather clunky) separate box is located about a foot from the plug, thus allowing it to be tucked into the map pocket on my 172. Not only is this a safe place for storage, it also removes any battery weight from the cable. More on the battery box later. I am not doing a head-to-head comparison but I suspect many of the other models share this weight reduction feature.

    I am sort of a rusty pilot. I started flying in the 80’s but life got in the way several times. With 70 hrs under my belt, I recently came back and FINALLY finished off my PPL. During training I noticed that I was somewhat often saying to my CFI: “what did the controller just say?” I finally decided it was a combination of age, unfamiliarity with the terminology plus background noise. The FARO’s made that problem completely go away in an instant. Now that I have a better command of the terminology, I could live without them. That said I have no plans of switching back to my old headset anytime soon.

    Now, about that clunky battery box… My only complaint is that the on/off switch located on the battery box sometimes gets toggled in my headset bag – thus powering the headset and causing the batteries to die. [Ed.: See photo below showing exposed switch.] Luckily the FARO’s are failsafe and continue to work with dead batteries or with the switch in the off position – I have done both without any issues. From what I can tell, they are no worse than the passive FARO’s noise wise – I’ve tried both, separate story.

    In general, I counter the battery switch issue by twisting the belt clip 170 degrees to help guard the switch while in the bag – I will send a photo to Jeff for future inclusion. [Ed.: See photo below for his solution.] That, plus traveling with extra batteries, has worked well to address this problem. In fact, I have not had this issue reoccur since employing the belt-clip trick. I am not sure if this is because the belt-clip works or if I am just being more cautious. Regardless, because of this one, not so insignificant issue, I dinged them 0.5 points on durability – technically design / execution issue. Otherwise, I love this headset and gave it an all around 10.

    Post Script:
    Inspired by this posting, I called FARO. The technician indicated he hadn’t heard of any complaints regarding the G2 switch. That said, coincidently, the new G3 has a radically reengineered switch. It now has a push on/off switch with a no-use auto shutoff feature. Hence the G3 would resolve my problem. I was informed that, if I desire, I could exchange my G2 for a G3. FARO would extend a $200 credit toward the new headset. While I declined (hard to justify the $$$ for a GA / pleasure pilot) it seemed like a fair offer. Assuming the G3 works as well as the G2 and the new switch works as advertise, I would suspect this new headset would rate a solid 10 in my book.
